Sailing Secures Spot At MAISA Champs With 6th Place Finish At Luce Trophy

Chestertown, MD- The Washington College Sailing Team hosted the Luce Trophy and earned a sixth place finish to secure a place for them at the MAISA Champs next weekend.

Luce Trophy
Saturday, October 24:

Teams arrived early hoping to get some races done before the wind died. With the forecast shaky, RC received maisa approval to shift to 3 race sets during the first set for A division. The wind, coming from the north east, decided it was a good day to keep sailing and stayed around for most of the day. Shifting around to the north a little during races, it stayed around 5 knots until the early after noon when it started to die. Racing was postponed after race 6A. During this break, one redress was granted, a protest was heard resulting in 2 DSQs. B division returned to the water and sailed 3 more races. During that set, RC, along with the redress committee, decided that a retail of 6A was needed due to wind conditions during the race combined with scoring issues. 6A was resailed at the end of the day and racing concluded for the day. One final protest was heard in 6A, which did not result in any further penalties.

Sunday, October 25:

No wind appeared for racing today. Teams remained on a shore postponement until noon. With the forecast unlikely to change, a meeting between coaches, team reps, and RC concluded that further postponement would not result in quality racing. With 6 races in each division yesterday, RC decided that no further racing would be done today. Results stand with the top 6 teams qualifying for War Memorial. Congratulations to SUNY Maritime for their regatta win. Penn State, Virginia Tech, Queen's, Princeton and Washington College round out the top 6.
