Chris Johnson Earns Individual National Championship Title for Trap & Skeet Team

The senior earned the first ever men's title in the American Doubles Skeet

SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Washington College Trap and Skeet Team (WCTS) competed in one of the largest ACUI-SCTP Collegiate Clay Target National Championships on record. with approximately 1,200 athletes, 62 Division 3 schools, and 29 Division 3 schools in the HOA. WCTS contended with a variety of weather conditions throughout the week with temperatures ranging from 45-95 degrees and wind from 0-30mph. The nationals squad was smaller (6) than past years, but they fought for every target throughout the week. 
  • Monday - The tournament began on a windy American Skeet field. Even with the wind, WCTS finished 28th out of 52 schools. WCTS broke a team score of 444/500 led by team high gun Max McNulty Van Oordt '27 (91/100). Also contributing to the team score were Trice Moore '28 (90/100), Colin Krug '26 (88/100), Jeffrey Paes '29 (88/100), and Gracie Heintzelman '28 (87/100).
  • Tuesday - The team pivoted to the sporting games and broke 404/500 on the Super Sporting Clays event, finishing 21st out of 42 schools. WCTS was led by Trice Moore (86/100) followed closely by Max McNulty Van Oordt (85/100), while seniors Chris Johnson '26 and Colin Krug both added (78/100), and Gracie Heintzelman (77/100). 
  • Wednesday - As the weather started to warm up WCTS took to the Sporting Clays course where they were met with lots of big air and long distance targets. The team broke a 354/500 earning them a 21st place finish out of 51 schools. WCTS was led by Trice Moore (79/100). Rounding out the rest of the top 5 scores were Gracie Heintzelman (74/100), Chris Johnson (71/100), Colin Krug (66/100), and Jeffrey Paes (64/100). 
  • Thursday - Saw WCTS return to the skeet field for the Doubles American Skeet event. The Shoremen broke 446/500 and finished 9th out of 34 schools, only one place behind last year's record setting squad. The top 5 scores were posted by Trice Moore (95/100), Chris Johnson (94/100), Colin Krug (90/100), Jeffrey Paes (87/100), and Gracie Heintzelman (80/100). At the end of the week Johnson's 94 was enough to claim B-Class National Champion.
  • Friday - Both trap events were completed on the final day of competition beginning with American Trap where the team broke 462/500 only 16 targets behind the program record and finishing 23rd out of 51 schools. WCTS was led again by Trice Moore (97/100), Jeffrey Paes (94/100), Gracie Heintzelman (92/100), Max McNulty Van Oordt (90/100), and Colin Krug (89/100). In the afternoon the team finished off the 6 event series with American Doubles Trap setting one last program record breaking 420/500 only 14 targets away from the program record and finishing 15th out of 34 schools. The team score was shot by Trice Moore (89/100), Gracie Heintzelman (88/100), Chris Johnson (83/100), Colin Krug (80/100), and Jeffrey Paes (80/100).
  • Overall, in all six events, WCTS finished in 16th place out of 29 Division III Colleges with a combined score of 2530/3000.
