Washington College Director of Athletics Thad Moore elevated Philip Quick to head men's and women's swimming coach in July of 2022 after serving as interim head coach for one season.
Shoremen SwimmingÂ
In 2021-22, Quick led the Shoremen to a 4-4 mark, including a second-place finish at the TYR Yellow Jacket Invitational at Randolph-Macon. At the Centennial Conference Championships that winter, he coached a pair of Shoremen to All-Centennial honorable mention recognition as they won a silver medal at the championships.Â
The next winter saw the team win Randolph-Macon's Arena Yellow Jacket Invitational, beating out seven other programs to win the crown. The team concluded the season at conference championships with the team winning five medals (one gold, one silver and three bronze medals) and three swimmers earning all-conference honors. The three all-conference swimmers were the most since four in 2017.Â
Washington netted two bronze medalists at the 2024 Centennial Championships to cap the 2023-24 season.Â
The 2024-25 season saw the Shoremen net their first winning dual meet season in nine years, going 7-6. The team took home two gold medals and two bronze medals at the conference championships.Â
During his four seasons as head coach, eight program records were set in individual events and three in relay events. He also saw Zach Affeldt earn back-to-back Centennial Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Men’s Swimming in 2024 and 2025.Â
Quick was named assistant coach of the Washington College men's and women's swim teams during the summer of 2018. Quick swam at fellow Centennial Conference school Ursinus College and also has experience coaching at the high school and club levels.Â
While a student-athlete at Ursinus, Quick specialized in the individual medley and breaststroke, though he was often placed wherever needed in dual meets in order for the Bears to compete for a win. He also contributed to every relay event at the Centennial Conference Championships during his career and made the finals in every event he entered at those championships. He was the Bears' representative on the Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team as a senior and helped hold the school's 200 freestyle relay record from his freshman year until it was broken after he graduated. Â
Quick, who earned a B.S. from Ursinus in 2013, began coaching in 2010 while he was still an undergraduate. While living in North Carolina, he spent four years coaching Eastern Carolina Aquatics (ECA). During his final two years with ECA, he created the club's newest satellite program on Camp Lejeune. At its peak, the team grew to 120 swimmers with short course, long course age group and senior state championship qualifiers, high school state qualifiers, and sectional qualifiers. Â
Shorewomen SwimmingÂ
In his first season in 2021-22, the Shorewomen captured the TYR Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon.Â
In 2022-23, the Shorewomen had three swimmers reach the A Final at the Centennial Conference Championships.Â
Quick guided Washington to a spot in the A Final in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events at the Centennial Championships to cap the 2023-24 season.Â
The 2024-25 season saw the Shorewomen tally a 10-4 mark in dual meets, their first winning season since 2017-18 and the first time tallying double-digit dual meet wins since 2008-09. At the conference championships, the Shorewomen had two swimmers race in the A Final of the 200 butterfly.Â
During his four-year reign as head coach, the team has had five program records set in individual events.Â
