Evan Clayton

Evan Clayton was named the head sailing coach and director of sailing in January 2024 in his second stint with the College's sailing program, 

In his first season as head coach in the spring of 2024, the team won the Tom Noble Team Race is his first regatta as head coach and qualified for America's Trophy with a fourth place finish at The Grant.

The 2024-25 season saw the team earn a second place finish at Central Series 1 in the season opener with the team winning the B Division and a third place finish at the Princeton Fall Open.

In 2025-26, Washington won Central Series 1, earned second place results at the John Quinn and Stony Brook 2x2 race and landed third at Princeton's Tiger Women's Open.

He previously served as the sailing program's assistant coach from 2016-21 before becoming to the Coordinator of Campus Recreation at Washington College from 2021 until his return to the sailing program as head coach. In the Fall of 2023 he served as the team's contact between head coaches. 

From 2015-21, Clayton served as the fleet captain for the Magothy River Sailing Association's junior training program. In that role, he was responsible for the planning and registration of the two-week long program, contracting instructors, providing management and supervision, overseeing lessons, and working with parents and volunteers.

Clayton spent eight summers, 2008-15, as a sailing instructor for Chesapeake Sailing School, teaching both children and adults, and six summers, 2010-15, as an instructor for the Magothy River Sailing Association's junior training program.

Clayton has also sailed competitively and has experience with numerous boats, including the Flying Juniors, 420s, and Lasers prominently used in collegiate sailing.

A May 2009 graduate of Virginia Tech with a B.A. in History, he received his American Sailing Association 201 Instructor Certification in June 2013 and US Sailing level 1 Certification in 2020.
