Travis Turgeon was named head baseball coach atWashington College in June 2012. He had previously served as theteam's associate head coach during the 2011-12 academic year and asan assistant coach in 2010-11.
In his first season as head coach, Turgeon's teamupset nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins.
Taking on a host of on-field and other duties duringthe 2012 campaign, Turgeon helped guide the Shoremen to aschool-record 28 win (seven more than their previous high-watermark of 21), their first-ever Centennial Conference ChampionshipGame appearance, and their first-ever votes in a national top 25poll. The Shoremen led the Centennial Conference in stolen bases,sacrifice hits, sacrifice flies, fewest hits allowed per nineinnings, and fielding percentage during the 2012 season. Theyfinished fifth in all of Division III in stolen bases per game.
Turgeon was named an assistant coach at WashingtonCollege prior to the 2010-11 academic year before his promotion toassociate head coach last summer. He spearheaded "Shoremen Nine" -the team's community service effort which featured nine outreachprograms during the 2011-12 academic year.
Turgeon got his start in collegiate coaching as avolunteer assistant coach for Division I Coppin State during the2010 season. His work with Coppin State's pitchers helped lower theEagles' team ERA by nearly 50% from the previous season. He hasalso served as a coach in the New England Collegiate BaseballLeague during the summer months.
As a player, Turgeon began his collegiate baseballcareer at Division I University of Connecticut and was named a 2006Big East Academic All-Star. Following two years at UConn, hetransferred to Springfield College, where he led the Pride in bothbatting average and wins as a senior in 2009. Turgeon alsoplayed for the Maryland Redbirds of the Ripken Collegiate Leagueduring the summer of 2009, leading the team in ERA.
Turgeon will be spending the Summer of 2013 assistantcoach for the Baltimore Redbirds of the Cal Ripken League.
Turgeon's Dad was minor league player of the year forChicago Cubs, his Uncle is a coach in the Pittsburgh Pirates minorleague system and his Grandfather was drafted by Green BayPackers.
Turgeon received a B.S. in Physical Education fromSpringfield in 2009 and his Master's in History from WashingtonCollege in 2013.
