Box Score Stafford Tallies Goal, Assist in
Win
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College scored
twice in the first half en route to a 3-0 Centennial Conference
women's soccer victory over visiting Bryn Mawr tonight on Kibler
Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The win was the first for the
Shorewomen (6-9-1, 2-7 Centennial) over the Owls (5-11-1, 0-10)
since 2003.
The Shorewomen grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 22nd
minute when sophomore Gabby Devaud (Baltimore, MD/Institute
of Notre Dame) sent a ball ahead through the defense in
the box to freshman Jen Stafford (Lake George, NY/Berkshire
School, MA), who sprinted ahead and fired in the goal at
21:21.
Sophomore Jennifer Kiarsis (Rye,
NY/Canterbury School, CT) made it 2-0 when she received a
pass ahead from freshman Sierra Abaie (Fredericksburg,
VA/Stafford) and sent the ball into the lower-right corner
at 31:25. The assist was the first of Abaie's collegiate career.
Washington got its third goal at the 76:26 mark
when sophomore Stephanie Willingham (Carroll County,
MD/South Carroll) blasted in her first career goal from 35
yards out off an assist from Stafford.
Bryn Mawr held a 14-11 advantage in shots in the
game, but Washington held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Ripple
(Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) played the first half for the
Shorewomen and made two saves. Senior Caroline Grier
(Kennett Square, PA/Sanford School, DE) played the second
half and made five saves. Rebecca Joseph made six
saves for the Owls in the loss.
Washington's last win over Bryn Mawr was a 4-1
victory on November 1st, 2003. The two teams tied the following
year before the Owls recorded four-straight one-goal victories over
the Shorewomen.
The Shorewomen close out the 2009 season Saturday
with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Dickinson.
