Glasser Wins Three Individual
Events
CHESTERTOWN, MD - Junior Rachel Glasser
(Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) won three individual
events as host Washington College rallied from a 10-point deficit
with three events remaining to post a 110-95 non-conference women's
swimming victory over visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland this
afternoon at Casey Swim Center. The Shorewomen improved to 3-1 this
season with the win, their 55th consecutive non-conference victory.
The Seahawks fell to 5-1 on the season with the loss.
St. Mary's held an 80-70 lead heading into the
final three events - the 500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 200
freestyle relay. Washington went 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle, took
first and second in the 100 breaststroke, and won the 200 freestyle
relay to outscore the Seahawks 40-15 the rest of the way. Glasser
won the 500 freestyle in a Washington College season-best time of
5:13.24, freshman Sarah Sykes (Haworth, NJ/Northern
Valley-Demarest) was second in 5:33.56, and sophomore
Mary Stroman (Bala Cynwyd, PA) was third in
5:43.04. Sophomore Jenna Moore (Catonsville, MD/Mount de
Sales) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.38, while freshman
Melanie Craig (Newtown, PA/Council Rock) was
second in 1:12.44. Sophomores Morgan Phillips
(Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), Laura Risell
(Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), Ellen
Liebenow (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge), and Stroman took
the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.72.
Earlier in the meet, Glasser also won the 1000
freestyle in 10:50.25 and the 200 freestyle in 1:59.38. Senior
Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area)
won the 50 freestyle in 25.32. Freshman Darcy Zink
(Baltimore, MD/Towson), Craig, Gerhart, and Moore won the
200 medley relay in a WC season-best time of 1:54.81.
Additional second-place finishes were turned in by
Sykes in the 1000 freestyle (11:27.53), Gerhart in the 100
butterfly (1:00.20), Moore in the 100 freestyle (55.90), and Zink
in the 100 backstroke (1:04.70). Zink's time in the 100 backstroke
was a WC season-best.
The Shorewomen return to action one week from today
with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against Franklin
& Marshall.
