Box Score Chambers Tallies Game Highs of 19 Points,
Four Steals
ALLENTOWN, PA – Host Muhlenberg College had
six players score in double figures as the hosts beat visting
Washington College, 85-67, on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall
in Centennial Conference men's basketball action. The Mules are now
3-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the win, while the
Shoremen fall to 2-4 and 0-2 respectively.
Muhlenberg raced out to a 14-0 lead in the first
6:19 as four different Mules scored during the run. The Shoremen
would finally get on the board with 13:06 left in the first half on
a three-pointer by senior guard/forward Andrew Chambers
(Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti). Washington cut it to
16-7 with 11:49 to go in the first on a layup by senior forward
James Whall (Freehold, NJ/Freehold), but the Mules
scored the next nine points to grab a 25-7 lead with 9:57 to go in
the first on a layup by Rob Berish. The Shoremen
netted an 11-4 run to reduce the Mules' lead to 29-18 on a trifecta
by Chambers with 7:43 to go in the half, but the Mules answered
right back with a 7-0 run to take a 36-18 lead with 6:35 left on a
Jake Ramsay lay-in. Muhlenberg would take a 45-34
lead into halftime.
Washington scored the first seven points of the
second half to cut the Muhlenberg lead to 45-41 on a layup by
senior forward Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) with
18:51 left in the game. However, the Mules countered with a 14-4
run over the next 4:10 to lead 59-45 following a layup by
Brian Frankoski. After two consecutive jumpers by
the Shoremen to cut the lead to 59-49, Muhlenberg would go on a
15-2 run to take its largest lead of the day at 74-51 with 9:50 to
go on a Spencer Liddic layup. The closest WC would
come the rest of the way was 16 points in the final minute.
Ryan Foster led Muhlenberg in
scoring with 14 points in the win and also swiped a team-best two
steals. Obi Nwizugbo chipped in with 11 points,
while Berish, Frankoski, Liddic and Peter Barnes
all scored 10 points. Liddic tallied a double-double as he grabbed
a game-best 11 rebounds to go with his 10 points, while Frankoski
led all players with eight assists.
For the Shoremen, Chambers had game-bests of 19
points and four steals in the contest. Sophomore guard/forward
Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti)
would net 12 points for WC on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor.
Kines grabbed a team-best six rebounds and chalked up three steals.
Muhlenberg shot 53% from the field and 64% from
three-point range, while Washington was 37% and 22%, respectively.
The Mules held a 43-26 advantage on the boards, while the Shoremen
committed just 11 turnovers to Muhlenberg's 21.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with their
home opener against visiting Swarthmore in Centennial Conference
action. Tip time is 8:00 p.m.
