FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Host University of Mary
Washington got 14 kills from Anne Lutkenhaus and
hit .342 overall as a team as the Eagles swept visiting Washington
College, 25-23, 25-15, 25-12, in a non-conference volleyball match
this afternoon at Goolrick Gym. The Eagles improved to 8-3 with the
win, while the Shorewomen fell to 7-4 with the loss.
The Eagles lead 24-23 and clinched the opening set
on a Lutkenhaus kill from Ally Blaine. Mary
Washington held the largest lead of the set by just four points,
which was a 5-1. Washington College netted the next four points to
even the first set at 5-5 and neither team led by more than three
points during the remainder of the set.
In the second set, Mary Washington broke open a 6-6
tie with a 15-5 spurt to grab a 21-11 lead on its way to a 25-12
victory.
The third set saw the Shorewomen win the first two
points, but the Eagles won 12 of the next 14 points to take a 12-4
lead and never led by fewer than six points the rest of the set.
Blaine handed out a match high 21 assists for the
home squad, while Katlyn Shiflett dished out eight
assists. Laura Gomez netted nine kills, while
Lindsey Scott recorded seven digs to tie for the match-high. Gomez
and Scott each served four service aces to lead all players.
Freshman outside hitter Jenny Lee
(Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) led WC with 11 kills and
led all players with a .688 attack percentage for the match. Senior
setter setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy
Trinity) tallied 19 assists, while freshman libero Kaitlin
Rowan (Damascus, MD/Damascus) tied Scott for match best in digs
with seven.
The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 7:00
p.m. non-conference contest at Goucher.
