Box Score Devaud and Stafford Score in Tie for
Washington
FREDERICK, MD -- Visiting Washington College and
host Hood College played to a 2-2 tie in a non-conference women's
soccer match this afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field. The
Shorewomen are now 3-2-1 on the season, while Blazers are 5-2-1. It
is the first tie for Washington since a 0-0 draw with Wesley on
September 1, 2006.
Following a scoreless first half, freshman forward
Jen Stafford (Lake George, NY/Berkshire School
(MA) put the Shorewomen up 1-0 at the 52:52 mark with her
first career goal when she finished off a feed from sophomore
forward/midfielder Kira Pancotti (Briarcliff Manor,
NY/Briarcliff). The Blazers' Jessica
Devine evened the match 3:38 later with Carlie
Colella tallying the assist.
Sohpomore midfielder Gabby Devaud
(Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) put Washington
back up 2-1 at 61:03 courtesy of a pass from sophomore defender
Stephanie Willingham (Carroll County, MD/South
Carroll). Hood knotted the match at 2-2 when Casey
Miller converted a penalty kick following a WC foul in the
box at the 79:05 mark. The Blazers took the final 10 shots of the
second half, but could not score and the contest went into
overtime.
In the first overtime session, each team having one
shot apiece. Willingham had a shot on goal with 11 seconds left in
the period for the Shorewomen, but the shot was turned away by Hood
goalkeeper Rachelle Buhrman.
The Blazers held a 3-1 edge in shots in the second
and final overtime period, but Washington goalkeeper Tori
Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) stopped the two shots
on goal to help preserve the tie.
Hood held a 29-12 edge in shots in the match and
had all 14 corner kicks in the contest. Ripple made 14 saves on the
day for the guests, while Buhrman tallied seven stops for the
hosts.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a
3:30 p.m. non-conference match at Trinity (DC).
