Box Score Stafford Scores Only Goal in First-Ever Win
Over Diplomats
LANCASTER, PA -- Freshman Jen Stafford
(Lake George, NY/Berkshire School, MA) scored the game's
only goal as visiting Washington College snapped a 31-game
Centennial Conference losing streak with a 1-0 overtime win over
host Franklin & Marshall this afternoon in Lancaster, PA. The
win was the Shorewomen's first-ever over the Diplomats, who had
held an 11-0 advantage in the all-time series. Washington improved
to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the win, while the
Diplomats fell to 2-7 and 0-2 with the loss.
The two teams combined for a total of just four
shots in the first half, with the Diplomats recording three of
those. The second half featured more offense as F&M held a 6-3
advantage in shots in the period, but it was Washington which would
get off the last shot in regulation when freshman Kira
Pancotti (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Briarcliff) had a shot
saved by F&M goalkeeper Katie Golding at the
87:05 mark.
Washington freshman Ainsley Boynton
(Radnor, PA/Westtown School) took the first shot of the
overtime period, but the ball came back out off Golding and
Stafford collected the rebound and put in the game-winner at 97:23.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Ripple
(Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) made four saves in the win
for the Shorewomen, while Golding made two for F&M. The
Diplomats held a 9-6 advantage in shots in the game, but the
Shorewomen recorded the final four of the contest.
Washington's last Centennial Conference win was a
3-2 double-overtime victory over McDaniel on October 29, 2005.
The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 7:00
p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore.
