Parreco Tallies First Collegiate Point For Shorewomen

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – Lauriann Parker scored the game winning goal with 4:21 left in the first overtime period to lift host St. Mary's (MD) past visiting Washington College, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium in a non-conference field hockey game.  The Seahawks improve to 7-1 on the year, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-3.  It is the third straight year that the two teams have gone to overtime with the Seahawks prevailing in the last two.

Parker was able to control a loose ball in the circle and flicked it into the goal for the game-winning tally in the first extra session.

In the first half, St. Mary's broke onto the scoreboard first when Susan Smith scored on a feed from Allie Skiest just 9:27 into the game off of a penalty corner.  Washington had two chances to try to tie it in a seven second span, but Seahawks' goalie Lydia Garcia denied senior attack Danielle Rosato (Narvon, PA/Pequea Valley) both times.  The hosts took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Shorewomen tied the game 7:25 into the second half when senior defender Sara Rutkowski (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) leveled the score at 1-1 when she finished off a reverse sweep pass from freshman attack Angela Parreco (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island).  It was Parreco's first career point.  WC had a penalty corner with 48 seconds left in regulation, but they could not score on the opportunity.

Washington outshot St. Mary's in the game by a 12-7 margin, including eight of the nine in the second half.  The Shorewomen had 13 penalty corners in the contest, while the Seahawks had just three.

Garcia made four saves in the win for St. Mary's, while senior goalkeeper Shannon Davis (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) tallied one save.

The Shorewomen return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference contest against visiting Franklin & Marshall.
