CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior
attack Danielle Rosato (Narvon, PA/Pequea Valley)
scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal on a penalty
stroke with 17:17 remaining in the game to lead host Washington
College past 16th-ranked Franklin & Marshall, 2-1, in a
Centennial Conference field hockey game this afternoon on Kibler
Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
F&M (5-2, 1-1 Centennial) took a 1-0 lead when
Eileen O'Reilly blasted in a shot off a pass in
transition from Allison McLaren with 14:18 left in
the first half. The Shorewomen (4-3, 2-0) evened the score when
junior midfielder Gussie Reilly (Buck Hill Falls,
PA/Mercersburg Academy) blasted a ball into the circle
that was deflected up and in by junior attack Emily Trees
(Kensington, MD/Connelly School of the Holy Child) with
6:35 remaining in the period.
Rosato's penalty stroke was set up on a great
transition play by the Shorewomen that was set up off a broken
penalty corner by F&M. Reilly ended up with the ball all
alone, racing downfield, where she was tripped up by Diplomat
goalie Avery Koep, creating the penalty stroke
call.
Senior goalkeeper Shannon Davis (Sykesville,
MD/Liberty) made seven saves for the Shorewomen, while
freshman midfielder Heather Noto (Mamaroneck,
NY/Mamaroneck) picked up a defensive save. Koep had
three saves for F&M; Valerie Sauers added a
defensive save for the Diplomats.
Each team recorded nine shots in the game. The
Shorewomen enjoyed a slight 5-3 edge in penalty corners.
The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 4:00
p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Swarthmore.
