Sea Gulls Edge Shoremen, 75-71

Breslin Pours in Game-High 26 Points, Career-Best 10 Boards in Loss

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Chris McGrew scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead visiting Salisbury to a 75-71 non-conference men's basketball win over host Washington College tonight inside Cain Athletic Center. The Shoremen got a game-high 26 points and a game-high and career-high 10 rebounds from junior guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) in the loss. 

The two teams exchanged runs during the first half. Salisbury (6-6) held a 19-12 lead before the Shoremen (4-8) went on a 20-7 run to open up a 32-26 lead with 5:12 left in the period. The Sea Gulls responded with a 14-0 run to build a 40-32 lead on a lay-up by Jason Nwosu with 58 seconds on the clock. Salisbury held a 42-34 lead at halftime.

The Sea Gulls held a 57-46 lead with under 13 minutes to play in the second half before the Shoremen ran off 10 straight points to trim the lead to 57-56 on a three-pointer by junior forward Adam Naymick (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) with 8:59 left. Salisbury then scored the next six points to extend the lead to 63-56 on a pair of free throws by McGrew with 7:19 left. The Shoremen fired back with an 11-2 spurt to take a 67-65 lead on a pair of free throws by junior forward Chris Olsen (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) with 4:43 remaining. 

The Sea Gulls scored the next eight points to pull back in front, finishing the run with a lay-up by Devin Posey with 1:08 left. Salisbury held a 74-68 lead before Breslin sank a three-pointer with 34 seconds left to make it 74-71. Franco Greco missed the front end of a one-and-one for Salisbury with 24 seconds to go, but a three-pointer by WC junior guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) was off the mark with six seconds to go. Schittino's shot was rebounded by Justin Taylor, who was immediately fouled and made the second of his two free throws to clinch the win for Salisbury.

McGrew was 6-for-11 from the field and 9-of-10 at the foul line for his 21 points. Mike Maczko added 18 points and seven rebounds for Salisbury, while Eric Johnson chipped in 10 points.

Breslin was 8-for-20 from the field and 8-for-12 from the free-throw line en route to his 26 points. He added four assists to go along with his first career double-double. Schittino and Naymick scored 10 points each for the Shoremen. 

Salisbury shot 46% from the field and 79% from the free-throw line in the win. The Sea Gulls also made three of their nine three-point attempts and held a 41-31 advantage on the boards. The Shoremen were 42% from the field and 64% from the line and knocked down seven of their 11 three-point attempts in the game.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Gettysburg.
