Box Score Breslin Scores Game-High 30 Points And Grabs Career-High 11 Rebounds
GETTYSBURG, PA – Andrew Powers scored a team-high 26 points as host Gettysburg College downed visiting Washington College, 69-55, on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference men's basketball action at Bream Gym. The Bullets are now 6-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Shoremen are now 4-9 overall and 3-3 respectively.
The Bullets raced out to a quick 7-3 lead in the first 1:47 of the contest, capped off on a bucket by Powers. The Shoremen countered with a 16-6 run to take a 19-13 lead with 7:37 to go in the first half on a hoop by junior guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) after he stole the ball from a Gettysburg player. Breslin scored 11 of the team's first 19 points. The Bullets cut the six-point Shoremen lead to one point at 23-22 with 3:21 left on a jumper by Powers. Down 28-24 with 2:40 left, Gettysburg scored seven of the last nine points of the half to take a 31-30 lead into halftime. Paul Crone drained a three-pointer with 39 ticks left in the half to put the Bullets ahead 31-28.
In the second half, Breslin gave the Shoremen the lead back at 34-33 when he scored on a layup with 16:57 remaining in the game. But 29 seconds later, Larry Geedey gave the Bullets the lead back for good when he hit a trifecta to make it 36-34. Powers would give Gettysburg its biggest lead of the game to that point, 40-35, when he connected on a two free throws with 12:38 to go. The Shoremen scored six of the next eight points to cut the Bullets' lead to 42-41 with 11:13 on a traditional three-point play by Breslin. Brendan Trelease gave the Bullets a 52-48 lead with 5:56 left on a two free throws, but Breslin cut the lead back to one point at 52-51 when he sank a triple. Gettysburg stretched the lead back to five points on two free throws by Powers and a Kevin Kennedy jumper respectively to lead 56-51 with 4:12 remaining. After a jumper by junior forward Chris Olsen (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) cut the lead to 56-53 with 3:14, the Bullets hit five free throws in six tries to take a 61-53 lead with 1:09 left. The hosts scored eight of the game's final 10 points to provide the final margin.
Geedey added 19 points for Gettysburg, while Kennedy chipped in with 10 points. Trelease grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Bullets.
Breslin scored a game-best 30 points and totaled a career and contest-best 11 rebounds. He also led all players with four steals in the game. Senior guard Dylan Bernstein (Laytonsville, MD/Gaithersburg) handed out four assists to lead all players.
The Bullets shot 41% from the floor and 38% from three-point range, while the Shoremen were 36% and 25% respectively. Gettysburg was 32-for-43 from the free throw line, while Washington was 9-for-14.
The Shoremen return to action on Thursday night with a 8:00 p.m. tip-off against visiting Dickinson in Centennial Conference action.
