Box Score Trees Scores Goal in Loss for Shorewomen
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Roxanne Jaffe scored the game-winning goal with 6:28 left in regulation to give visiting Haverford College a 2-1 Centennial Conference field hockey win over host Washington College this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby. Jr. Stadium.
Senior attack Emily Trees (Kensington, MD/Connelly School of the Holy Child) gave the Shorewomen (9-7, 5-4 Centennial) a 1-0 lead when she scored on a rebound of a saved shot by freshman attack Claire McAuliffe (Clarskville, MD/Glenelg Country School) with 17:55 remaining in the first half. Trees's goal as the only score of a rainy first half. The Fords (9-7, 5-4) recorded the first five shots of the game, but the Shorewomen held a 10-2 advantage in shots the rest of the period.
The rain cleared out at halftime, but neither team would score again until the Fords evened things up on a goal by Margaret Selsor, who tipped in a blast from Mary Hobbs off a rebound of a saved short by Bryn Bissey with 18:00 to go in regulation. Jaffe's game-winner was a blast off a give-and-go with Hobbs near the top of the circle during a penalty corner. Senior midfielder Gussie Reilly (Buck Hill Falls, PA/Mercersburg Academy) recorded the Shorewomen's only shot on goal the rest of the way, but it was stopped by Haverford goalkeeper Sydney Hyder with 3:36 remaining.
Hyder finished with six saves in the win for the Fords, who were outshot, 17-16, in the win. Sophomore goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made eight saves in the loss for Washington. Washington held a slim 11-10 advantage in penalty corners in the game.
The Shorewomen close out their regular season Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at McDaniel.
