Box Score Smith Scores in Loss for Shorewomen
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Swarthmore College defeated host Washington College, 2-1, in a Centennial Conference women's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
The Shorewomen (2-7-1, 0-3-1 Centennial) scored off the opening kick-off as senior forward Kira Pancotti (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Briarcliff) sent a pass ahead and into the top of the box on the opposite side to sophomore midfielder/forward Heather Smith (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie), who fired the ball into the lower right side of the net. Emma Sindelar evened the score for Swarthmore (7-4, 3-2) by scoring on a loose ball in front of the goal following a free kick at 19:47. The Garnet took the lead on a breakaway goal by Mariam Vonderheide at 35:55 after receiving a pass from Alyssa Bowie.
Swarthmore held a 10-6 advantage in shots in the first half and controlled possession in the second half, outshooting the Shorewomen, 9-3, over the final 45 minutes.
Marie Mutryn made two saves in the win for the Garnet, while senior goalkeeper Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) made seven stops in the loss for Washington.
The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 5:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Muhlenberg.
