Box Score Tarbert, Wille Score in Loss for Washington
HAVERFORD, PA -- Mary Hobbs scored the game-winning goal with 57 seconds to play to rally host Haverford College past visiting Washington College, 3-2, in the first round game of the Centennial Conference Field Hockey Tournament tonight in Haverford, PA.
Junior attack Gabby Tarbert (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) gave the Shorewomen (10-8) a 1-0 lead just 4:30 into the contest, getting a shot past Haverford goalkeeper Sydney Hyder. Washington made it 2-0 when junior midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) scored on a blast with 23:17 to go in the first half. The Shorewomen took the 2-0 lead and a 7-6 advantage in shots into halftime.
The Fords (11-7) cut the lead in half when Roxanne Jaffe scored off a penalty corner from Bridget Gibbons with 20:40 remaining in the second half. Hobbs evened the score for Haverford with 11:26 remaining, scoring after a failed attempt to clear the ball by the Washington defense. Hobbs's game-winner came following a Washington turnover near midfield. Washington senior midfielder Gussie Reilly (Buck Hill Falls, PA/Mercersburg Academy) had the Shorewomen's last scoring attempt, but her shot went wide with 10 seconds to go.
The Fords finished the game with a 15-9 advantage in shots and an 18-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made seven saves in the loss for the Shorewomen, while Hyder made two shots in the win for Haverford.
Haverford will play at top seed Franklin & Marshall in a Centennial Conference semifinal game Saturday at noon. The winner of the game will advance to Sunday's championship game at F&M against the winner of Saturday's other semifinal between Ursinus and Johns Hopkins.
