Box Score Breslin Surpasses 1,000 Career Points in Loss
COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- Host Ursinus College held on for a 93-86 win over visiting Washington College in Centennial Conference men's basketball action tonight in Collegeville, PA. In the loss, Washington junior guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) became the 35th Shoreman in school history to reach 1,000 career points.
Breslin, who finished with a game-high 29 points, scored his 1,000th career point on a free throw with 18:35 left in the first half. Ursinus (12-12, 9-8 Centennial) led by as many as 11 points in the first half and took a 48-43 lead into the intermission.
Though the Shoremen (7-17, 6-11) got within one point at 69-68 following a pair of technical free throws by senior guard Dylan Bernstein (Laytonsville, MD/Gaithersburg) and a pair of free throws by Breslin with 8:47 to go. Ursinus answered by scoring nine of the next 11 points to push the lead to 78-71 on a lay-up by Jon Ward with 6:47 remaining.
Ursinus held an 83-75 lead before the Shoremen went on a 7-0 run to trim the margin to 83-82 on a steal and lay-up by Breslin with 3:59 left. Kevin Janowski knocked down a jumper on the other end for Ursinus before a pair of Breslin free throws made it 85-84 with 2:42 remaining. Matt Hilton made two free throws for the Bears with 1:54 left to push the lead to 87-84. Washington came up empty on its next two possessions and a pair of free throws by Jesse Krasna with 38 seconds to go gave Ursinus an 89-84 cushion. Breslin scored on a driving lay-up with 28 seconds remaining, but a pair of free throws by Matt Donahue with 14 seconds to play pushed the lead back to five. After a missed three by Breslin on the other end, Hilton made two free throws with six seconds left to provide the final margin.
Ward led four Bears in double figures with 25 points and a game-best 10 rebounds. He was 7-for-10 from the field and 11-of-12 at the free-throw line. Krasna added 19 points, four assists, and three steals and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line, while Hilton finished with 18 points, five assists, and four blocks and made all 10 of his free throws. Janowski added 11 points and eight boards for the Bears.
Breslin shot 12-of-14 from the free-throw line in his 29-point performance. He also dished out four assists and swiped three steals. Junior forward Adam Naymick (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) added 15 points and eight rebounds for Washington, while junior guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) contributed 10 points.
Both teams shot often and well from the charity stripe in the game as the Bears finished 39-of-42 at the line and the Shoremen shot 27-of-30. Ursinus shot 46% from the field to Washington's 34% and held a 43-37 advantage on the boards, but did commit 17 turnovers to Washington's nine.
Breslin and his older brother Joey Breslin, who scored 1,158 points from 2003-07 join Jerry and Joe Moye as the second set of brothers to each score 1,000 or more career points at Washington College. Jerry Moye scored 1,005 points from 1971-75, while Joe Moye scored 1,193 from 1978-82.
The Shoremen will close out their 2010-11 season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Johns Hopkins.
