Box Score Schittino Ties Career-High With 20 Points For WC
CARLISLE, PA – Host Dickinson College topped visiting Washington College, 82-68, on Saturday afternoon at the Kline Center in Centennial Conference men's basketball action. The Red Devils improve to 11-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play, while the Shoremen drop to 6-15 and 5-9 respectively.
Dickinson jumped out to a 13-6 lead just 3:47 into the game on a layup by Matt Dolan. The Red Devils led 20-13 with 11:45 to go in the opening 20 minutes when the Shoremen went on an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 21-20, on a fast-break layup by junior guard/forward Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti). With Washington leading 28-27, the hosts went on an 8-0 run to take a 35-28 lead with 4:10 to go in the half on a three-pointer by Adam Honig. Dolan would give Dickinson its biggest lead of the half at 39-31 when he drained a pair of free throws with 2:23 to go. The Red Devils took a 39-33 lead into the half.
The hosts pushed its lead to 45-35 just 1:06 into the second half on a Chris Heine jumper. Junior guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) would trim the Dickinson lead to 46-42 when he netted a trifecta with 15:23 remaining in the game. The Red Devils got the lead back out to 52-44 with 13:59 left on a Chris Barsanti triple. Breslin would net back-to-back baskets to cut the Dickinson to 52-48 with 12:24 to go. However the Red Devils would score the next nine points to take a 61-48 lead with 9:08 left on a Tucker Landy hoop. Washington would cut the Dickinson lead to 62-54 with 6:24 left in the contest on a free throw by junior forward Chris Olsen (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph). After Breslin scored on a layup after he stole the ball to reduce the Dickinson lead to 71-63 with 2:28 to go, Dolan answered with a three to give the hosts a 74-63 lead with 1:52 remaining. The closest the Shoremen got in the final 11:21 of the contest was eight points.
Dickinson's Dolan scored 20 points to tie for the game-high and added nine rebounds to lead all players and four assists to lead the hosts. Landy added 13 points, while Honig netted 10 points. The Red Devils held a 38-27 edge in rebounds.
For Washington, Schittino tied Dolan for tops in the contest with 20 points, tying his personal best. He shot 7-for-10 from the floor, 4-for-5 from three-point range and nailed both free throws. Breslin added 12 points, grabbed a team-high eight boards and passed out a game-best six assists, while Olsen added 11 points.
Dickinson shot 53% from the floor, 44% from three-point range and 74% from the free throw line. Washington shot 42% from the field, 42% from behind the arc and 67% from the charity stripe. Dickinson had 19 turnovers in the game, while Washington turned it over 16 times.
The Shoremen return to action on Wednesday night against Swarthmore at the Cain Athletic Center in conference play. Tip-off time is 8:00 p.m.
