Matt Wilfong Scores First Collegiate Goal in Loss

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Dickinson College scored three times in the second half en route to a 4-1 win over host Washington College in the Centennial Conference men's soccer opener for both schools tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Red Devils improved to 4-1-2 overall, while the Shoremen slipped to 1-3-1.

Taylor Ferry gave the Red Devils an early 1-0 lead at the 7:18 mark, heading in a free kick from Derek Kachadurian.  The Red Devils took that lead into halftime, holding a 9-3 advantage in shots in the period.

Dickinson added its second goal at 50:52 when Chris Shulz scored after streaking toward the goal and receiving a touch pass from Kachadurian. Javier Mena also picked up an assist on the play, setting up Kachadurian. Jamie Martin added the Red Devil's third goal quickly thereafter, dribbling through the defense and ending up with a point-blank shot at 53:18. 

The Shoremen got on the board when freshman midfielder Bob Libera (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) passed across the box to freshman midfielder Matt Wilfong (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll), who buried the ball into the lower right corner of the goal at 61:10. Wilfong picked up his first collegiate goal on the play, while Libera recorded his first collegiate assist.

The Red Devils extended the lead back to three goals when Ben Gemberling-Johnson scored off an assist from Daniel Gaj at 72:50.

Dickinson held a 21-11 advantage in shots in the game. Washington had a narrow 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. 

Reed Milbrath made two saves in the first half for Dickinson, while Cody Hickok made two in the second.  Senior goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) made 10 saves in the loss for Washington. 

The Shoremen are back in action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Widener.
