Manion Scores in Loss for Shorewomen

LYNCHBURG, VA -- DePauw University scored twice in the second half to rally for a 2-1 non-conference field hockey win over Washington College in a game played at Lynchburg College this evening. The Tigers improved to 1-1 on the season with the win. The Shorewomen were playing their season opener.

The Shorewomen took a 1-0 lead when junior midfielder Hilary Manion (Trappe, PA/Archbishop Carroll) scored off a deflection with 21:36 remaining in the first half.  DePauw held an 11-6 advantage in shots in the first half. 

The Tigers finally solved Washington sophomore goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) with 25:48 remaining in the second half as Margaret Ellis scored on her ninth shot of the game after Harryman stuffed two other shots in the preceding seconds. Bridgette Shamleffer scored the game-winner for DePauw with just 65 seconds remaining in the game.

DePauw finished the game with a 25-7 advantage in shots and an 18-5 advantage in penalty corners. Harryman, who was making her first collegiate start, finished with 15 saves. Maggie Steele made three saves for the Tigers.

The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow against 13th-ranked Lynchburg at 4:00 p.m.
