Box Score Duffy Scores Goal in Loss
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Chase Humphrey scored both Sea Gull goals, including the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 79th minute as visiting Salisbury University overcame an early one-goal lead to top host Washington College, 2-1, in a non-conference men's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Sea Gulls improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 1-1 with the loss.
The Shoremen got on the board at 9:55 when junior defender Robert Gavora (Falls Church, VA/Flint Hill School) sent a free kick into the box that was headed over by sophomore midfielder Sam Wild (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West) to junior defender Ryan Duffy (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) in front of the goal. Duffy buried the ball into the back of the net to give Washington the early 1-0 advantage. Humphrey blasted in the equalizer for Salisbury at 42:07, firing in a loose ball form 90 feet out.
Humphrey's penalty-kick goal came at the 78:37 mark following a Washington foul in the box.
Salisbury held a 25-11 advantage in shots in the game, including a 17-6 advantage in the second half. The Sea Gulls also maintained a 15-3 margin in corner kicks, including a 12-3 margin in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) made 14 saves in the loss for Washington. Jon Vnenchak made five saves for Salisbury.
The Shoremen return to action Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. game at Shenandoah.
