Box Score Tarbert Scores Game-Winner with 12 Minutes Left
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior attack Gabby Tarbert (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) scored the game-winning goal to give host Washington College a 2-1 non-conference field hockey victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland in the Shorewomen's home-opener this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
St. Mary's (1-2) scored on its first shot of the game as Lauriann Parker blasted in a shot off an assist from Susan Smith with 24:51 remaining in the first half. The Shorewomen (1-2) evened the score when senior attack Emily Trees (Kensington, MD/Connelly School of the Holy Child) dribbled down the right sideline then sent across in front of the goal to senior midfielder Gussie Reilly (Buck Hill Falls, PA/Mercersburg Academy) who sent a twisting shot into the back of the cage with 14:27 left. Washington enjoyed a 15-5 advantage in shots in the first half.
Neither team scored again until Tarbert netted the game-winner with 12:00 left off a Trees assist. Trees sent the ball in front of the goal to Tarbert who fired in a point-blank shot.
The Shorewomen held a 26-7 advantage in shots and a 14-3 margin in penalty corners in the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made four saves in the win for Washington, while Christy Bishop had nine saves in the loss for the Seahawks.
The one-goal margin of victory marked the seventh time in nine all-time meetings between the two teams that the game was decided by one goal.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. game at MIT.
