Box Score Lewns Scores Two Penalty-Stroke Goals in Win
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior defender Erin Lewns (Fallston, MD/North Harford) scored a pair of penalty-stroke goals as host Washington College defeated visiting Dickinson College, 5-2, in a Centennial Conference field hockey game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play with the win, while the Red Devils fell to 6-8 and 1-6 with the loss.
The Red Devils took an early 1-0 lead when Natalie Polk scored just 4:26 into the game. Lewns evened the score for the Shorewomen with a penalty stroke goal with 22:28 remaining in the first half and senior midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) put Washington in front, 2-1, with a goal off a rebound with 20:26 left before the intermission.
The Shorewomen added their third goal with 21:06 to go in the game when junior midfielder/defender Heather Noto (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) tipped in a rebound. Dickinson cut the lead to 3-2 on a blast by Alex Boorse with 12:07 to go, but Lewns scored on her second penalty stroke of the day with 7:22 left to push the lead back to two goals. Senior midfielder Hilary Manion (Trappe, PA/Archbishop Carroll) accounted for Washington's fifth and final goal on a penalty stroke of her own with one second left in the contest.
The Shorewomen held a 36-13 advantage in shots in the game, including a wide 26-3 margin in the second half. The Shorewomen also recorded 21 of the game's 25 penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made five saves in the win for the Shorewomen, while Lewns added a defensive save. Katy Schlechtweg made 18 saves for Dickinson. Marybeth McCarthy had two defensive saves, while Caroline Karwel had one.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Ursinus.
