SWARTHMORE, PA – Audrey Allen scored the game-winning goal with 5:18 left in the game to lift host Swarthmore to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over visiting Washington College in a Centennial Conference field hockey game at Clothier Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Garnet improve to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while the Shorewomen drop to 5-5 and 2-2 respectively.
Allen scored the winner as she tipped in a pass from Julia Tallarico from the right side off of a Swarthmore penalty corner to snap the 2-2 tie. The Shorewomen had two chances to tie the score on a pair of penalty corners at the end of the second half, but could not score. Swarthmore's Allison Ranshous stole the ball and cleared it out of the circle to end the game after time had expired.
The Garnet struck 10:24 into the game when Katie Teleky scored after she received a pass from Sophia Agathis and put the ball into an empty cage from the right side. The Shorewomen answered at the 14:45 mark of the first half when sophomore forward Claire McAuliffe (Clarksville, MD/Glenelg Country School) scored on a second chance opportunity after her initial shot was saved by Swarthmore goalkeeper Gabriella Capone to even the score at 1-1 and that would be the score at intermission.
The Shorewomen took a 2-1 lead 5:59 into the second half when senior midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) scored after her shot in the circle went off of a Swarthmore defender and into the goal. Swarthmore would even the score the game at 2-2 with 11:42 left when Nia Jones went to goal from 40 yards, beat the Washington defense and scored from the right side. The score would remain tied until 5:18 left in the game.
Swarthmore held a 25-16 edge in shots and had an 18-11 advantage in penalty corners. Capone made four saves for the Garnet, while junior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) stopped 10 Swarthmore shots for the Shorewomen.
The Shorewomen are back in action on Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Muhlenberg.
