Box Score Phillips Scores First Collegiate Goal in Win
ALLENTOWN, PA -- One goal in each half proved to be more than enough scoring for visiting Washington College, which pinned a 2-0 setback on host Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference field hockey action this afternoon in Allentown, PA. The Shorewomen improved to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play with the win, while the Mules slipped to 7-4 and 3-3 with the loss.
The Shorewomen netted the only goal of the first half when sophomore attack/midfielder Grace Phillips (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) knocked in a goal with 10:21 remaining in the period after Muhlenberg goalkeeper Kristen Dornenburg came out of her cage. The goal was the first collegiate goal for Phillips. Senior midfielder Hilary Manion (Trappe, PA/Archbishop Carroll) was credited with an assist on the play. Washington controlled the first half, holding a 10-4 advantage in shots and a 7-2 margin in penalty corners over the first 35 minutes.
The score remained 1-0 until Washington sophomore attack Claire McAuliffe (Clarksville, MD/Glenelg Country School) fired in her 10th goal of the season with 10:30 left in the contest to give the Shorewomen a 2-0 cushion. McAuliffe's goal came on a second effort after her first shot was stopped by a defensive save by Heather Porrini.
The Shorewomen finished with a 21-10 advantage in shots for the game and a recorded 17 of the game's 23 penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made three saves en route to the shutout for Washington; Dornenburg made 12 for Muhlenberg in the loss.
The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game at nationally-ranked Mary Washington.
