Box Score Manion Scores in Loss for Shorewomen
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Eleventh-ranked Catholic University topped host Washington College, 4-1, in the field hockey season opener for both teams this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
Catholic held a 14-2 advantage in shots in the first half and held a 2-0 lead after Hayley Wright knocked in a goal off a rebound with 24:24 remaining in the first half and Maura Campbell scored off a penalty corner pass from Kim Jermann with 14:32 left. The Shorewomen got on the board on their second shot of the game when senior midfielder Hilary Manion (Trappe, PA/Archbishop Carroll) tipped in a ball sent by senior midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) during a penalty corner with 1:38 to go.
Catholic extended its lead to 3-1 when Catherine Mirsky scored on a penalty stroke with 33:18 left in the second half. The Cardinals tacked on their fourth goal when Campbell scored off a rebound with 15:32 left.
Catholic finished with a 25-7 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made 13 saves in the loss for the Shorewomen, while Megan Comunale made four in the win for Catholic. Senior defender Erin Lewns (Fallston, MD/North Harford) and junior midfielder/defender Heather Noto (Mamroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) each had a defensive save for Washington.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Wesley.
