Box Score Harryman Stops Four Shots
ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – Paige Decker of host St. Mary's (MD) scored the game's lone goal just 9:22 into the game as the Seahawks topped visiting Washington College, 1-0, in a non-conference field hockey game on Wednesday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium. The Seahawks improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Shorewomen fall to 2-3.
Decker's goal came during a loose ball in the circle and she was able to get a stick on it and deposit it into the goal with 25:38 left in the opening half.
In the first half, each side had a penalty stroke, but could not convert their chance. The Seahawks had a penalty stroke 70 seconds into the game, but Washington College junior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) denied the stroke of Lauriann Parker. The Shorewomen had a chance to draw even with 2:04 left in the first half when Washington was awarded a penalty stroke. But Seahawk netminder Christy Bishop stopped the stroke attempt of senior attack Hilary Manion (Trappe, PA/Archbishop Carroll) to preserve the one-goal lead.
The Shorewomen had another chance to tie the game on a stroke with 22:42 left in the second half, but the penalty stroke by senior midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) was stopped by Bishop. The Shorewomen had two more shots to tie it the rest of the game, but both shots went wide and St. Mary's held on for the one-goal win.
The Shorewomen held a 13-8 edge in shot in the game and had 10 of the contest's 14 penalty corners. Bishop made six saves in the win for St. Mary's, while Harryman turned away four shots for Washington in the setback.
It was the fifth straight year that the Shorewomen and Seahawks played a one-goal game. St. Mary's has won three of the five contests decided by the narrowest of margins.
Washington opens conference play on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. when the Shorewomen travel to Baltimore to play Johns Hopkins.
