McAuliffe Scores Both Goals in 2-1 Overtime Win Over Blue Jays

Box Score

Win is Shorewomen's First Over Hopkins Since 2005
BALTIMORE, MD -- Sophomore attack Claire McAuliffe (Clarksville, MD/Glenelg Country School) scored both Washington College goals, including the game-winner, to give the visiting Shorewomen a 2-1 overtime win over host Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference field hockey opener for both schools tonight at Homewood Field. The win was the Shorewomen's first over the Blue Jays since 2005, breaking a six-game losing streak in the all-time series.

Washington improved to 3-3 this season with the win, with all three victories coming in overtime. McAuliffe also scored the game-winner in the Shorewomen's 3-2 overtime win over Wilkes six days ago. Johns Hopkins fell to 3-2 with the loss.

McAuliffe gave the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead when she banged in a loose ball in the center of the circle with 17:21 remaining in the first half. The Blue Jays knotted the score at 1-1 when Meghan Kellett hit a hard shot over Washington junior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) with just 1:00 left before halftime. Each team had seven shots in the first half. Neither team scored in the second half, despite Washington firing off 13 shots in the period and Hopkins taking eight.

McAuliffe's game-winner came after she received a long pass from senior defender Erin Lewns (Fallston, MD/North Harford) on a run down the left side of the field in transition, streaked past her final defender, and fired the ball past Hopkins goalkeeper Elizabeth Peijnenburg 3:20 into overtime.

McAuliffe piled up eight of the Shorewomen's 22 shots in the game. Hopkins totaled 15 shots in the contest. Washington also held a 9-8 edge in penalty corners. Harryman made five saves in goal for Washington, while senior defender Hillary Kane (Rhinebeck, NY/Millbrook School) added a defensive save. Peijnenburg made eight saves in the loss for the Blue Jays.

The Shorewomen's last win over Johns Hopkins was a 2-0 win in Baltimore on October 19th, 2005. Washington has now won three overtime games in a season for the first time since the 2001 campaign.

The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Bryn Mawr.
