Shorewomen Surpass 2011 Win Total

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The host Washington College women's soccer team topped visiting Bryn Mawr, 2-1, in a Centennial Conference game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 3-3 overall, surpassing their win total from all of last season, and 1-1 in conference play with the win. The Owls fell to 2-3-1 and 0-1 with the loss.

Washington got on the board first when sophomore midfielder/forward Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) blasted in a ball from the center of the box sent on a corner kick from senior defender Kim McClellan (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) at 31:09. The Shorewomen took the 1-0 lead into the intermission after holding a 4-3 edge in shots in the first half.

Washington added its second goal 27 seconds into the second half when junior midfielder/forward Heather Smith (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) stole the ball back from a Bryn Mawr defender and sent the ball in past Bryn Mawr goalkeeper Rebecca Joseph. The Owls got on the board at 47:01 when Caitlin Homstad headed in a corner kick sent by Karina Siu. The Shorewomen held the Owls off the scoreboard for the rest of game to come away with the win.

The Shorewomen maintained a 12-9 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks in the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Potochney (Newark, DE/Newark) made three saves in the win for the Shorewomen. Joseph also made three saves for the Owls in the loss.

Washington, which won its home opener against Immaculata by a 2-0 count one week ago tonight, is now 2-0 at home for the first time in a season since 2003, when they topped Notre Dame (MD), 4-0, and Rutgers-Newark, 3-1, to open their home schedule.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Gettysburg.
