First Back-to-Back Wins Over Gettysburg Since 1959-60

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Freshman midfielder Drew Thompson (Dumfries, Va./Woodbridge) scored the game's only goal in the 51st minute to lift the host Washington College men's soccer team to a 1-0 Centennial Conference win over visiting Gettysburg this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. Washington improved to 7-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play with the win. The Shoremen's seven wins are their most in a single-season since finishing the 2006 campaign with an 8-8 record.

The victory was also the Shoremen's second in a row over the Bullets as Washington posted a 1-0 win over Gettysburg last season. The last time the Shoremen beat the Bullets in consecutive meetings was over a half-century ago as Washington notched a 4-1 win in 1959 and a 6-0 victory in 1960.

The Bullets (2-10-1, 2-3-1) held a 4-2 advantage in shots in a scoreless first half, but it was the Shoremen who had the only shot on goal of the period as Thompson had his shot in the 43rd minute saved by a diving Connor Darrell for Gettysburg.

Thompson put the Shoremen on the scoreboard with a blast from the top of the box off a pass behind from sophomore forward Cody Gray (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) at 50:03. The assist was the first of Gray's collegiate career. The Bullets' final scoring chance came at the 88:51 mark but a shot by Andrew McLane was saved by freshman goalkeeper Jon Wendeborn (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon).

Junior goalkeeper Lin Robinson (York, Pa./York Country Day) made his first career start in goal for the Shoremen and did not face a shot on goal. Wendeborn played the second half in goal for the Shoremen and made four saves to earn his first collegiate win. Darrell made three saves in the loss for the Bullets.

Gettysburg finished the game with a 12-9 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore.
