Tordella Scores First Two Collegiate Goals

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Haverford raced out to a 5-1 lead and held off a host Washington College rally to prevail, 5-3, in a Centennial Conference field hockey game on Wednesday evening at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium in the home finale for the Shorewomen.  The Fords improve to 8-6 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial, while the Shorewomen drop to 3-10 and 2-6 respectively.

Haverford got onto the scoreboard at the 7:18 mark when Megan Holt scored off of a rebound to give the Fords the lead at 1-0.  The Fords made it 2-0 with 15:30 left in the first half when Jen DiMaria deflected in a pass from Nicole Witte as Witte came down the right side and DiMaria put the shot in the cage from in front of the goal mouth.  The guests made it 3-0 with 11:08 left in the opening half when Allison Martin scored from the right side high in the circle off of a penalty corner pass from Catherine Aronowitz and that would be the score at halftime.

The Shorewomen got onto the board 4:49 into the second half when freshman attack Jennifer Tordella (New Castle, Del./William Penn) scored her first collegiate goal on a loose ball situation after she got a pass from freshman midfielder Jenn Miller (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) to cut the Haverford lead to 3-1.  For Miller, it was her first collegiate assist and point.  The Fords scored two goals in a 1:49 span to take their biggest lead of the game at 5-1.  Bryn Bissey deflected in a Jen DiMaria pass at 51:51 and DiMaria scored from the middle of the circle on a feed from Martin to give Haverford a four-goal cushion with 16:20 remaining.  Tordella scored unassisted off of a rebound to cut the lead to 5-2 with 12:31 remaining and senior defender Heather Noto (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) tipped home a shot from freshman midfielder Elizabeth Davis (Earleville, Md./Bohemia Manor) at the 60:12 mark.  However, the Shorewomen could not get any closer and the Fords held on for a two-goal win.

DiMaria had two goals and an assist for Haverford, while Martin had a goal and a helper to pace the Fords attack.  Bissey and Holt also scored for Haverford, while Aronowitz and Witte each had an assist.  In goal, Lindsey Lopes made five saves to pick up the victory for Haverford.

Tordella had two goals for Washington, while Noto added a score.  Davis had an assist for WC.  In goal, senior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, Md./Southern) made nine saves for the hosts, while sophomore defender Sydney Sikon (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made the lone defensive save of the game.

The Fords held a 19-15 edge in shots, while both teams had 12 penalty corners in the game.

The Shorewomen travel to McDaniel for a Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. Centennial contest.
