Barry Breaks Single-Season School Record with Fifth Shutout

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Senior midfielder Heather Smith (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute to give host Washington College a 1-0 Centennial Conference women's soccer win over visiting Bryn Mawr tonight on a rain-soaked Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. freshman goalkeeper Melissa Barry (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) recorded her school-record fifth shutout of the season for the Shorewomen (4-5-2, 1-3 Centennial) in the win. 

Bryn Mawr (1-10, 0-5) held a slim 3-2 advantage in shots in the first as each team put just one shot on goal in the period. Junior forward Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep) tallied the Shorewomen's shot on goal at the 15:04, while Bryn Mawr's came off the foot of Karina Siu at 44:16.  

Washington opened the second half with three shots in the first nine minutes, including a pair of shots on goal by senior midfielder Kathleen Maleski (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) and sophomore winger Caitlin Byrnes (Crofton, Md./South River). Mark tallied a pair of shots on goal 71 seconds spart at 69:27 and 70:38 for Bryn Mawr. Patinella took a long shot on goal for the Shorewomen at 76:50. Smith was taken down in the box in the 83rd minute and sent a low shot past Bryn Mawr goalkeeper Aviva Kosansky at 82:33. 

Barry made four saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season, breaking the single-season school record of four set by Rebecca Potochney just last season. Kosansky also made four saves in the loss for the Owls.

The Shorewomen finished with an 8-5 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks in the game.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Dickinson.
