Barry Turns Away Seven Shots For WC

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College and visiting DeSales played to a 0-0 tie in a non-conference women's soccer match on Saturday evening at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two sides.  Both teams are now 1-0-1 so far this season.

After a scoreless first half in which just five shots were taken, three by Washington and two by DeSales, the Shorewomen had the second half's first scoring opportunity in the 48th minute, but the shot by junior forward Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep) went wide to the right.  The Bulldogs' Jessica Wetherhold launched a shot from 25 yards out with 31:55 left in the second half but her shot went wide left.  DeSales' Brady Walsh launched a chip shot from 30 yards out, but freshman goalkeeper Melissa Barry (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) leaped and made the save and covered up the loose ball with five-and-a-half-minutes remaining in regulation to preserve the scoreless tie.  Walsh almost scored again two minutes later when she headed the ball off of a cornerkick just over the crossbar.  DeSales had more chance with just over three minutes left in regulation, but Wetherhold's shot was stopped by Barry.

In overtime, Patinella had a shot from 25 yards out just 15 seconds into the first overtime session, but the shot was stopped by the Bulldogs' goalie Michelle Churchman.  After that, DeSales had five chances to win the match in the remainder of overtime, but could not score the golden goal.  Wetherhold then had two chances in the 93rd minute to get the winner for DeSales in the 93rd minute, but was turned away on both.  Barry was able to knock the ball away and led to a corner kick for the Bulldogs on her first golden goal attempt.  Off the corner moments later, Wetherhold had another chance to end the match, but her header was stopped by Washington freshman wing Erin Smedley (Highland, Md./River Hill).

In the second overtime, DeSales' Eva Barna's chip from about 25 yards out went just wide to the left in the 108th minute and in the 109th minute Alyssa Borgesi's shot on a free kick from about 25 yards out went wide right.  DeSales had one last chance off of a corner in the final seconds, but the Washington defense held firm as Barry stopped back-to-back shots by Barna and Borgesi respectively in the final 10 seconds to preserve the scoreless draw.

DeSales held a 16-5 edge in shots total and an 8-1 advantage in the overtime sessions and the Bulldogs had all six corner kicks in the match.  Barry turned away seven shots for WC, four of the seven coming in overtime, while Churchman stopped three shots for DeSales.  Washington was also credited with one team save. Wetherhold had a match-best five shots for the Bulldogs, while the Shorewomen got three shots from Patinella.

It was Washington's first home double overtime contest since September 1, 2006 when Washington played to a scoreless tie with visiting Wesley.  The match versus Wesley was the team's first home contest at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

The Shorewomen return to the pitch next Saturday at 4:00 p.m. versus Widener in a non-conference contest.
