O'Connell Scores First Two Collegiate Goals in Loss

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Johns Hopkins University scored four unanswered goals to rally from a 2-0 deficit en route to a 4-2 win over host Washington College in the Centennial Conference field hockey opener for both schools this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Blue Jays improved to 3-1 overall with the win, while the loss dropped the Shorewomen to 1-4.

Junior attack Jackie O'Connell (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) gave the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead when she blasted a ball off Hopkins goalkeeper Zoey Atabek and into the back of the cage with 19:07 remaining in the first half. The goal was the first collegiate goal for O'Connell, who also plays basketball at Washington College and joined the field hockey team last spring.

Hopkins got on the board with 5:05 left in the opening period when Shelby Graham redirected a ball sent from outside the circle by Allison Thompson. The Shorewomen held an 18-8 advantage in shots in an offensive-minded first half.

The Blue Jays tied the score with 25:15 remaining in the second half when Alexa Lantiere redirected a ball in off the stick of Kiara Duncan. Hopkins then took its first lead of the game when Lantiere redirected a ball in sent off the stick of Storm Kodde with 22:25 left. The Blue Jays tacked on an insurance goal when MacManus scored on a rebound with 12:33 to go.

The Blue Jays controlled most of the second half, limiting the Shorewomen to five shots while equalling their own first-half total of eight shots. Hopkins held a 12-9 advantage in penalty corners in the game, including a 7-2 margin in the second half.

Atabek finished the game with 14 saves for Johns Hopkins, while senior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, Md./Southern) made seven stops for the Shorewomen.

The Shorewomen return to action one week from today with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Gettysburg.
