Box Score O'Connell Scores Two Goals in Win
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Junior attack Jackie O'Connell (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead host Washington College to a 4-2 Centennial Conference field hockey win over visiting Gettysburg today on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the win, while the Bullets fell to 3-3 and 0-2 with the loss.
The Shorewomen took an early 1-0 lead just 2:22 into the game when junior attack Claire McAuliffe (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) scored off an assist from senior defender Heather Noto (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck). The Bullets evened the score with 13:06 remaining in the first half when Amanda Schlager sent a pass ahead to Liz Baron who fired in a goal. Washington regained the lead 1:15 later when O'Connell blasted in a shot after receiving a tip pass from junior attack Grace Phillips (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge).
Gettysburg evened the score again just 46 seconds into the second half when Baron scored off an assist from Hannah Fitzgerald during a penalty corner. The Shorewomen went back in front when junior attack Kate Duggan (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Academy of the New Church) blasted in a goal off an insert from McAuliffe with 15:58 left. The Bullets again tied the score with 13:00 to play when Fitzgerald scored on a bouncing shot off a feed from Erica Barbuto.
O'Connell scored what would prove to be the game-winner on a rebound off a defensive save by Gettysburg's Nina Diamond with 9:26 remaining.
Gettysburg finished with a slim 20-18 advantage in shots and a narrow 13-12 edge in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, Md./Southern) made 10 saves in the win for the Shorewomen, while Alexis Bralow made eight in the loss for the Bullets.
The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Wesley.
