McAuliffe Scores in Loss for Shorewomen

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Mia Day scored the game-winning goal with 8:08 left in the second overtime to give Denison University a 2-1 victory over Washington College in a non-conference field hockey game played today at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The Big Red improved to 3-0 with the win, with all three of their victories coming by one goal and all three going into at least one overtime. The Shorewomen fell to 1-3 with the loss, with all three losses coming by one goal.

After a scoreless first half, Denison got on the board 1:55 into the second half when Taylor Bacon tipped in a ball played in from the top of the circle by Katie McMahon. The Shorewomen evened things up with 18:53 left in the contest when junior attack Claire McAuliffe (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) redirected in a ball sent by junior attack Kate Duggan (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Academy of the New Church). Duggan got off the final shot of regulation, but her would-be game-winner was saved by Denison goalkeeper Laura Campbell with 32 seconds on the clock.

Denison got off two shots in the final minute of the first overtime, including one by Molly Chapman in the final seconds, but Washington senior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, Md./Southern) saved both.

McAuliffe opened the second overtime with a shot on goal stopped by Campbell 1:21 into the period. McMahon then sent a shot wide on the other end with 12:49 remaining. Chapman got a shot on goal off with 9:45 left that was stopped by Harryman. McMahon then took a shot with 8:09 remaining that Harryman saved, but Day knocked in the rebound one second later to give the Big Red the win.

Denison held a 20-15 advantage in shots and a 13-11 edge in penalty corners in the game.  Campbell made seven saves in the win for Denison, while Harryman made 11 stops in the loss for the Shorewomen. Washington sophomore defender Emily Eline (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) had a pair of defensive saves in the contest.

The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with their home opener, a 7:00 p.m. game against sixth-ranked Mary Washington.
