Cunningham Scores 11 To Lead WC

LEXINGTON, Va. – Host VMI broke open a 17-10 game with a 25-8 run in the first half en route to a 128-54 victory over visiting Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall in men's basketball action.   The Division I Keydets are now 7-6 on the season, while the Shoremen drop to 3-7.

The Shoremen trailed just 17-10 with 15:16 left in the first half on a jumper in the paint by senior guard Kevin Cunningham (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) when the Keydets took control of the game with a 25-8 run to take a 42-18 lead with 9:15 to go in the first half on a Trey Chapman free throw.  Tim Marshall sparked the run by scoring 10 of VMI's 25 points during the spurt.  VMI would take a 70-25 lead into halftime.

The Keydets outscored the Shoremen 58-29 to provide the final margin.

VMI, which had seven players score in double figures was led by QJ Peterson's 20 points.  Marshall scored 19 points, D.J. Covington netted 16 points, Rodney Glasgow added 15 points, while Phillip Anglade, Christian Burton and Jordan Weethee all chipped in with 12 points.  Julian Eleby had seven rebounds to lead the team.  Anglade had four steals to lead all players, while Covington had a game-best three blocks.  Peterson handed out a game-topping four assists.  VMI shot 63% from the floor (43-for-68), 54% from three-point range (14-for-26) and 85% from the foul line (28-for-33).  The Keydets held a commanding 48-28 edge on the boards.

Cunningham led the Shoremen with 11 points and had nine rebounds to lead all players, just missing out on a double-double.  Junior guard Sean Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) had three assists to lead the team, while junior guard John Weston (Tampa, Fla./Bolles School) had a pair of steals to lead the guests.  Washington shot 30% from the floor (21-for-69), 27% from three-point territory (7-for-26) and 42% from the free throw stripe (5-for-12). 

The two teams met for the first time since the 1922-23 season when the Shoremen topped the Keydets 26-15.

The Shoremen return to action on Monday night when they host Wesley at 6:00 p.m. in a non-conference contest.  The two Delmarva rivals were supposed to play on December 17, but the game was postponed that night.
