Libera and Fili Tally Goals For Shoremen

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – KJ DePontes finished off a corner kick chance for Gettysburg 2:28 into the first overtime session to give the host Bullets a 3-2 victory over visiting Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field in a Centennial Conference men's soccer match.  The Bullets improve to 9-5-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Centennial, while the Shoremen fall to 5-9-1 and 0-6-1 respectively.

Kyle Franks took the corner kick and the kick bounced off of a Washington defender and from the top of the box DePontes blasted a shot through traffic that found the right side of the net to give Gettysburg the win.

The Bullets struck 8:50 into the match for the opening goal when Henry Smith received a pass from DePontes and completed the transition opportunity from the right side as the shot went in the left side of the net.  The lead was short lived however as the Shoremen evened the contest at the 12:14 mark of the first half when senior midfielder Bob Libera (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) headed in his third goal of the year to level the contest at 1-1.  The play started on a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Dimitri Kaliakin (Landenberg, Pa./Salesianum (Del.) who found the head of senior forward Sam Draper (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) who found the head of Libera for the tying score.

The match remained tied 1-1 until the 70:35 mark of the second half when Franks scored on a free kick from just outside the box to give the Bullets a 2-1 lead.  But with 3:20 left in regulation, senior forward Joseph Fili (Sparks, Md./Loyola Blakefield) headed in a corner kick off the foot of sophomore forward Brian Wilkinson (Sykesville, Md./Mount St. Joseph) to tie the match at 2-2 and force overtime where it would be settled early by the host Bullets.

Gettysburg held a slim 13-11 edge in shots and had both shots in overtime, while WC had a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.  In goal, Max Karen made three saves to get the win for Gettysburg, while senior goalkeeper Lin Robinson (York, Pa./York Country Day) made a career-best seven stops for Washington in the setback.

The Shoremen return to action on Tuesday night with their home finale at 7:00 p.m. against Swarthmore on Senior Night.  The match will also represent the first home contest on the new turf surface at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium as the old turf was destroyed in an August rainstorm.
