Howard Scores for Shorewomen, Barry Makes 12 Saves

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Washington College and Franklin & Marshall College women's soccer teams played to a 1-1 Centennial Conference double-overtime tie this afternoon on Washington's Lower Bermuda Grass Field.

Washington junior forward Bailey Howard (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had a great chance to put the Shorewomen (3-9-3, 0-6-2 Centennial) on the board in the 27th minute as she received the ball on a breakaway, but her shot went just wide.

Megan Rubenstein gave F&M (1-13-1, 0-7-1) the lead early in the second half, scoring on a loose ball from the left side at 47:23. The Shorewomen tied things up at 57:47 on a goal by junior forward Bailey Howard (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) off an assist from freshman midfielder/forward Emani Silva (Odenton, Md./Arundel) at 57:47. Rubenstein had the Diplomats' final shot of regulation saved by Washington sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Barry (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) at 85:38 and Howard had the Shorewomen's final shot of regulation saved by Shannon Johnson-Finn 58 seconds later.

Nicole Ryencki nearly won the game for the Diplomats at 91:02, but Barry made a reaching save over her right shoulder to keep the core tied at 1-1. Barry made another save on a Rynecki shot, this one a rolling right to her, at 94:43.

In the second overtime, Barry made a diving save of a Rubenstein shot at the 102:50 mark and then made a pair of stops on shots by Kim Kornbluth with 106:10 and 108:02 remaining, respectively. Howard had one final chance to win the game for the Shorewomen, but Johnson-Finn made a save on her shot at 109:48 after she beat a defender and raced upfield.

Barry finished with 12 saves in the game, helping offset the Diplomats' 22-6 advantage in shots. Johnson-Finn had two saves for F&M.

Today's game marked the first time either the Shorewomen or their opponents had lost a lead in over two years, a streak of 40 consecutive games. King's (Pa.) College held a 2-0 lead on the Shorewomen September 26, 2012, before Washington came back to win the game, 4-2.

The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Haverford. It will be their first game on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium this season after the facility's turf was ruined by an historic rainstorm in August.
