Box Score O'Connell Scores Game's Only Goal
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The host Washington College field hockey team clinched the fifth and final spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament with a 1-0 win over visiting McDaniel College in the regular-season finale for both teams this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 6-4 in conference play and 13-4 overall, while the Green Terror, who would have clinched the tournament spot with a win, fell to 9-8 and 5-5.
The Shorewomen got on the board with 6:31 left in the opening half after sophomore attack Jenn Miller (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) saved a ball from going out of bounds and found senior attack Jackie O'Connell (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) in the middle-left of the arc for a goal. Washington held a 10-3 advantage in shots in the first half.
Washington made the lead stand up throughout the second half, despite a late charge by the Green Terror that saw McDaniel record five penalty corners in the final three minutes of the game. A shot by Rachel Cressman with 50 seconds to go was denied by a defensive save by Washington senior defender Emily Bodmer (Laurel, Md./Elizabeth Seton).
The Shorewomen finished the game with a 17-5 advantage in shots and a 16-7 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Sadie Robertson (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) made one save in the win, while Caila White made eight saves in the loss for the Green Terror.
The Shorewomen will play at fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins in the lone first-round game of the Centennial Conference Tournament Wednesday.
