Second-Half Surge Pushes Green Terror Past Shoremen, 56-44

Box Score

Weston Scores 15 Points in Loss

WESTMINSTER, Md. --  Host McDaniel College outscored visiting Washington College, 35-20, in the second half en route to a 56-44 Centennial Conference men's basketball victory tonight in Westminster, Md. The Green Terror improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen slipped to 0-4 and 0-1.

McDaniel staked out an early 8-2 lead before the Shoremen went on a 13-0 run, including eight straight points by senior guard John Weston (Tampa, Fla./Bolles School), to grab a 15-8 lead.  The Shoremen held the Green Terror scoreless for a span of 7:52 before Cameron Royster scored for McDaniel with 7:53 left in the half to make it 15-10. Washington took a 24-21 lead into halftime after shooting 50% from the field in the period to McDaniel's 27%.

A Tim Stewart lay-up pulled the Green Terror even at 26-26 with 17:39 to go in the second half, before junior forward Dave Knox (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) answered on the other end 18 seconds later to make the score 28-26 in favor of the Shoremen. McDaniel took its first lead since the early going when Wesley Brooks sank a three-pointer with 14:10 remaining to give the Green Terror a 31-30 edge. Another three, this one by Andrew Merlo 40 seconds later, upped the McDaniel lead to 34-30.

After the Shoremen had trimmed the lead to a point, back-to-back three-pointers by Nick Perugino gave the Green Terror a 40-33 cushion with 10:13 remaining. Washington got back to within two points on a Weston lay-up with 7:31 to play to make it 40-38, but that was as close as the Shoremen would get the rest of the way. The Green Terror scored 16 of the game's next 20 points to pull away.

Stewart was the only McDaniel player to finish in double figures in scoring, tallying 11 points. Rosyter added nine points and eight rebounds, while Perugino supplied nine points on 3-for-4 three-point shooting in 12 minutes off the bench.

Weston paced the Shoremen with 15 points in the loss. Knox added 10 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks in 22 minutes before fouling out. Freshman guard Joey Shelton (Garnet Valley, Pa./Church Farm School) chipped in eight points in 19 minutes off the bench.

McDaniel shot just 35% from the field for the game to Washington's 41%, but held a 38-30 rebounding edge, including a 16-5 advantage on the offensive end.

The Shoremen return to action one week from today with their home opener, an 8:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game against Haverford.
