Box Score Thompson, Wilkinson Score for Shoremen in Loss
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Dickinson College scored twice in the first seven minute of the game and held on for a 3-2 win over host Washington College this afternoon in the Centennial Conference men's soccer opener for both schools this afternoon.
The Red Devils (5-2 overall) got on the board quickly when Drew Carneal deflected in a free kick from Austin Thames at the 3:16 mark. Dickinson added its second goal at 6:09 as Thames threw the ball in to Nate Latshaw, who headed the ball to Jonathan Harper for a goal into the lower right corner. Washington (4-3) got on the board at 11:28 on a curving blast from 25 yards out by sophomore midfielder Drew Thompson (Dumfries, Va./Woodbridge) courtesy of an assist from sophomore midfielder Christian Cooke (Bowie, Md./DeMatha).
The score remained 2-1 until the 54:07 mark when Alfred Hylton-Dei scored what would prove to be the game-winner for Dickinson, winning a 50-50 ball and scoring from 25 yards out. Sophomore forward Brian Wilkinson (Sykesville, Md./Mount St. Joseph) got the Shoremen back to within a goal with a goal from 25 yards out into the upper 90 at 85:00. Washington had its chances to tie the score late, but a header by freshman defender Michael Holowesko (Nassau, Bahamas/Asheville School [N.C.]) went wide at 88:35 and a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Dimitri Kaliakin (Landenberg, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) at 88:53 did not produce a shot.
Despite the loss, the Shoremen held a 12-10 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Reed Milbrath made three saves in goal for Dickinson. Sophomore goalkeeper Jon Wendeborn (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) played the first half for Washington and did not make a save, while senior goalkeeper Lin Robinson (York, Pa./York Country Day) made one save in the second half.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. game at Catholic.
