Box Score Four Shoremen Score In Double Figures
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting McDaniel got game-bests of 23 points and eight rebounds from Tim Stewart to come away with a 65-61 victory over host Washington College on Wednesday night in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game at the Cain Athletic Center. The Green Terror improve to 12-8 overall and 7-6 in the Centennial, while the Shoremen fall to 2-18 and 2-11 respectively.
In the first half, the Shoremen took a 15-10 lead with 12:12 remaining on a jumper by senior forward Sean Flanigan (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) before the Green Terror responded with a 15-5 run of their own to grab a 25-20 lead with 5:12 left in the half on a Josh McWilliams three-pointer. Washington would end the first half on a 12-2 run to take a 32-27 lead into halftime. Junior forward Pat Morgan (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) put the Shoremen ahead 30-27 on a triple with 1:19 remaining in the first and the scoring in the stanza was closed by two free throws from sophomore guard James Drury (Jenkintown, Pa./Germantown Academy) with 36 seconds to go.
The Green Terror came out on a 13-4 run to start the second half to take a 40-36 lead with 16:47 to go in the game on a traditional three-point play by Stewart. With the score tied at 40-40, the Green Terror took the lead for good with 15:58 remaining on a Brooks triple. The Shoremen would get the game within one point on six occasions, but could not get the lead. With 45 seconds left and McDaniel ahead 60-59, the Green Terror drew an offensive foul to keep the lead. Andrew Merlo would drain five of six free throws to seal the win for the guests.
Joining Stewart in double figures in scoring were Brooks with 11 and Duane Echols with 10. Merlo handed out a team-high four assists, while Phillip Perry had a contest-best five steals. The Green Terror shot 45% from the floor (21-for-47), 44% from three-point range (7-for-16) and 59% from the foul line (16-for-27). Stewart (9-for-11) and Merlo (6-for-8) combined to go 15-for-19 from the stripe for the guests, while the rest of the team was 1-for-8. McDaniel had 15 turnovers, while netting 10 steals.
Morgan, junior forward Dave Knox (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and freshman guard Joey Shelton (Garnet Valley, Pa./Church Farm School) all had 12 points to lead the Shoremen. Drury had 10 points and a game-high six assists for WC. Flanigan grabbed a team-high six rebounds for the hosts. The Shoremen, who turned it over 17 times, shot 44% from the floor (20-for-45), 36% from three-point land (5-for-14) and 76% from the free throw stripe (16-for-21).
Each team had 28 rebounds in the game. The teams were even in points in the paint (26-26) and points off of turnovers (20-20). The Shoremen held the edge in bench points (21-9) and second chance points (6-3), while the Green Terror had the advantage in transition points (6-2).
The Shoremen are back in action Saturday with a 2:00 Centennial Conference game versus visiting #16 Franklin & Marshall.
