Shorewomen Get Defensive In 1-0 Win Over Gwynedd Mercy

Theriault Scores; Defense Allows Just Two Shots

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Natalie Theriault scored the only goal of the night and the defense did the rest as the host Washington College field hockey team defeated visiting Gwynedd Mercy 1-0 in a non-conference field hockey game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 5-7 with the win, while the Griffins fall to 8-5 with the loss.

How It Happened
- Alli Dudley produced the first scoring chance of the night, stripping the ball away at midfield and earning a breakaway with the keeper, but she then sent her shot wide at the 4:23 mark.
- Washington grabbed a 1-0 lead with 26:51 to go in the first half as Theriault scored off a rebound. Elizabeth Davis took a shot on goal which was saved by Samantha Soscia, but the ball went wide off Soscia's pads to her right, where Theriault knocked it out of the air and into the back of the cage.
- The Shorewomen dominated the first half, taking seven shots, four of which went on goal, while holding the Griffins without a single shot.
- Neither team recorded a shot in the second half until a shot from Clare Ingersoll was saved by backup Griffins goalkeeper Sarah Crane with 18:56 to play.
- The Griffins finally recorded their first shot with 3:08 to play, a shot by Brianna O'Connell that went wide.
- Gwynedd Mercy had a chance to tie the game off of a penalty corner at the end of the game, but a shot by Melissa Russo with three seconds to play was saved by a diving Morgan Domanico as the Shorewomen held on for the win.

For the Shorewomen (5-7)
- Scorers: Theriault (1 goal).
- Goalkeeper: Morgan Domanico (1 save, 0 goals allowed, 70:00).
- The Shorewomen took 14 shots in the win/ and drew eight penalty corners.

For Gwynedd Mercy (8-5)
- Scorers: None.
- Goalkeeper: Soscia (3 saves, 1 goal allowed, 35:00), Crane (5 saves, 0 goals allowed, 35:00).
- The Griffins were held to just two shots in the loss and drew three penalty corners.

Notes
- It was the first ever meeting between the Shorewomen and Griffins in field hockey.
- Gwynedd Mercy entered tonight's game on a four-game winning streak, a streak that saw them score 22 goals in those four games, before being held to just two shots tonight.
