Bull Gores Red Devils with Game-Winning Free Kick in Shoremen's 2-1 OT Win

Shoremen End Nine-Game Losing Streak to Red Devils, Win Conference Opener for First Time in 10 Years

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Freshman midfielder Griffin Bull (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) scored the game-winning goal on a free kick with 3:15 left in the first overtime period to lift the host Washington College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over visiting Dickinson in the Centennial Conference opener for both schools this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The win was the Shoremen's first in a conference opener in 10 years and snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Red Devils.

How It Happened
- In the 25th minute, Chris Lewandowski header a ball right in front of the goal that was stopped, but not grabbed, by Dickinson goalkeeper Jeremy Palcan. Cole Strong managed to get a foot on the rebound, but his shot when wide to the left of the goal and out of bounds.
- In the 28th minute, A Dickinson defender knocked the ball away from Brian Wilkinson, but Strong was there to scored from 20 yards out, to the left of the goal, sending it into the right side for the 1-0 lead at the 27:30 mark.
- The Shoremen had a strong chance for a second goal in the 36th minute, but a header by Michael Holowesko after a corner kick sent by Dimitri Kaliakin went wide just to the left of the goal.
- Kaliakin had another scoring chance in the 54th, but that shot was saved by a diving Frederick Meagher, who took over in goal for Palcan at halftime.
- Washington goalkeeper Josh Samuels broke up a scoring chance by the Red Devils in the 62nd minute, going to his knees to stop a ball sent by Ryan Brown that would have gone in or found a cutting Dickinson player.
- Aaron Barclay executed a bicycle kick in the box that Meagher saved in the 64th minute and Meagher was injured during the scramble for the ensuing loose ball. Palcan re-entered the game for Meagher at that point.
- The Red Devils tied the score at 1-1 on their first corner kick of the contest as Macsen Pritchard headed in the corner sent by Matthew Edmonds into the right side of the goal.
- A header by Holowesko was saved by a diving Palcan in the 70th minute.
- Will Bracken had a chance to score on the run in the 82nd, but Samuels made the save.
- Samuels punched a free kick sent by Bracken over the top of the goal in the 85th and saved a header by Bracken in the 86th.
- Bull's free kick came from 30 yards out and was sent into the upper left of the goal. It was the only shot in overtime.

For the Shoremen (2-4, 1-0 Centennial)
- Scorers: Strong (1 goal), Bull (1 goal)
- Goalkeeper: Josh Samuels (6 saves, 1 goal allowed, 96:45)
- The Shoremen tallied 20 shots and seven corner kicks in the game.

For Dickinson (1-4-1, 0-1 Centennial)
- Scorers: Pritchard (1 goal), Edmonds (1 assist)
- Goalkeepers: Palcan (7 saves, 2 goals allowed, 78:05), Meagher (2 saves, 0 goals allowed, 18:40)
- The Red Devils tallied 10 shots and three corner kicks in the game.

Notes
- The win for the Shoremen was their first over the Red Devils since a 2-0 win on the road on October 7th, 2006.
- Washington's last win in a conference opener came on September 16th, 2006, in the form of a 1-0 double-overtime triumph at home against Ursinus.
- The Shoremen have out-shot their opponents in all six games this season.
