Kowalski Sets Career-High With Match-Best 18 Kills, Houck Tallies Career-Topping Five Aces

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The visiting Washington College volleyball team opened Centennial Conference play with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-18) victory over host Bryn Mawr on Saturday afternoon at Schwartz Gymnasium in the conference volleyball opener for both squads.  Freshman outside hitter Cassie Kowalski (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) had a career-best 18 kills to lead all players and junior right-side hitter Emily Houck (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had a match-high and career-best five aces.

How It Happened
- The Shorewomen led 16-14 in the first set before winning the final nine points of the set to win by 11.  Kowalski began the run with a kill and a bad set by the Owls ended the set.
- Washington used an 8-2 run to finish off the second set turning a 17-12 lead into a 25-14 set victory. Kowalski ignited the spurt with a kill and Baden finished the second with a finisher.
- Washington raced out to a 6-1 lead in the third and final set on a kill by Alaina Geissberger.  Trailing 18-10, Bryn Mawr won eight of the next 11 points to trim the lead to 21-18 on a Caroline Cosby kill.  However, the Shorewomen won the final four points of the set to clinch the match and ended it on a Kowalski ace.

For The Shorewomen (6-2, 1-0 CC)
- Kowalski (career-best 18 kills, .459 hitting percentage), Houck (career-high five aces), Audrey Utchen (10 digs and three aces), Taylor Horan (34 assists for tops in match), Rachel Baker (team-best 12 digs)
- Shorewomen had 11 service aces in the victory.
- Washington .284 in the win, hitting .226, .303 and .316 respectively.
- The guests totaled 41 kills in the triumph.

For Bryn Mawr (2-6, 0-1 CC)
- Cosby (match-high 16 digs and team-topping eight kills), Allie Nagelski (12 digs), Nolan Julian (13 assists)
- The Owls were held to 20 kills in the loss, getting 10 of them in the third set.

Notes
- Today was the first time a visiting team has won in the series since a four-set win by the Shorewomen in 2005, snapping a 10-match win streak by the home team.
- WC leads the all-time series 18-13.
- First CC opening win for Washington since 2012.
- Kowalski had set her previous high on Wednesday when she had 13 at Marymount.
- Washington tied its season-high for aces in a match with 11 as they had 11 against Rutgers-Camden on September 3.
