Blue Jays Fend Off Shoremen, 75-71

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Visiting Johns Hopkins University survived a second-half rally by host Washington College en route to a 75-71 Centennial Conference men's basketball victory tonight inside Cain Athletic Center.

How It Happened
- Hopkins scored the first eight points of the game. The Shoremen later cut the deficit to 22-20, but an ensuing 13-2 run by the Blue Jays gave them a 35-22 lead on a lay-up by Daniel Vila with 4:52 remaining in the first half. Hopkins went on to lead by as many as 16 points in the first half before the Shoremen cut the margin to eight by scoring the final eight points of the quarter. A fast-break lay-up by Armand del Castillo with one second to go set the halftime score to 40-32 in favor of the Blue Jays.
- The Shoremen twice got within six points early in the second half and got back to within one possession on a del Castillo lay-up that trimmed the Hopkins advantage to 56-53 with 7:51 remaining in regulation. Hopkins then scored the next seven points to push the lead back to double figures at 63-53 on a pair of Sam Gordon free throws with 6:02 remaining.
- Washington rallied again to pull back to within three points at 68-65 on a lay-up and free throw by Dallas Marshall with 1:48 remaining. James Drury cut the lead to one with a bucket with 35 seconds on the clock but then missed a free throw that would have evened the score at 68-68. The Blue Jays made seven of eight free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the win.

For the Shoremen (5-11, 1-8 Centennial Conference)
- Drury (13 points); Marshall (11 points, 6 rebounds); Joey Shelton (10 points); del Castillo (9 points, 4-for-5 field goals)
- The Shoremen shot 41% from the field, 6-for-16 from three-point range, and 13-for-24 from the free-throw line.
- Washington committed just nine turnovers in the game, while forcing 18 Blue Jay turnovers. 

For Johns Hopkins (10-6, 6-3 Centennial Conference)
- Gordon (20 points, 8 rebounds); Michael Gardner (15 points, 5-for-6 three-pointers, 9 rebounds, 6 steals); Kyle Doran (12 points); Vila (9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks)
- The Blue Jays shot 43% from the field, 6-for-20 from three-point range, and 19-for-25 from the foul line.
- Hopkins held a 48-29 advantage on the boards.

Notes
- Johns Hopkins head coach Bill Nelson picked up his 600th all-time head coaching victory with the win.
- Marshall was named the Goose Nation TV Player of the Game during the webcast of the game.
