Gophers Hold Off Rally by Shorewomen to Post Five-Set Win

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Goucher won the first two sets by two points before host Washington College won the next two sets, but the guests won four of the final five points to win the fifth set in a 3-2 (28-26, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, 15-12) victory on Wednesday night in a non-conference volleyball match at the Cain Athletic Center.  The Gophers improve to 4-6 on the year, while the Shorewomen drop to 4-7.

How It Happened
- Goucher took advantage of seven service errors by Washington to rally for a two-point after trailing by as many as five points.  With the score tied at 26-26, the Gophers took the lead on a service miscue and a service ace by Rachel Chapman clinched the opening set for the visitors as they overcame the hosts hitting .293 in the first.
- In the second set, the Gophers overcame a 17-14 deficit to win by two as they won 11 of the last 17 points.  Leading 24-23, an attack error by the Shorewomen ended the second. 
- Tied 13-13 in the third set, Washington took control with a 4-0 run to take a 17-13 lead on a ball handling error by Goucher.  An assisted block by Isabella Sansanelli and Laura Cochrane ended the third.
- The Shorewomen led 18-17 in the third set before rolling off seven of the final nine points to send the match to a fifth set with an attack error by Goucher being the clinching point.
- Visiting Goucher took leads of 4-0 and 11-7 before the Shorewomen scored four straight points to tie it at 11-11 on a Kylie Peets finisher.  The Gophers won the next three points to lead 14-11 on a Bianca Brown kill before Peets kept WC alive with a kill of her own to trim the lead to 14-12.  A service error by the Shorewomen ended the contest.

For The Shorewomen (4-7)
- Jensyn Hartzell (20 assists and 10 digs), Abby Smith (10 kills and 17 digs), Jenny Kabrick (career-best 16 digs), Abby Hilty (career-high 21 digs), Peets (career-best 14 kills), Lauren Zedlar (contest-topping 26 assists), Sansanelli (nine blocks), Cochrane (personal-best five blocks)
- Shorewomen had six service aces and 11 blocks in the match.
- WC hit .167 in the contest.

For Goucher (4-6)
- Brown (12 kills, three blocks and hit .526), Kaya Melchor (12 digs and three blocks), Tes DeJaeger (21 assists and 21 digs), Chapman (15 kills), Cat Hartley (contest-high 21 digs), Vendela Lundgren (20 assists), Virginia Estes (13 digs)
- Goucher had seven aces and four blocks in the victory.
- The guests hit .110 on the evening.

Notes
- Peets was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewoman Player of the Match during the broadcast.
- There were 31 ties and eight lead changes.
